No, this isn't "Leanna's Adventure's as Mommy" part III. Just an update on spring break.
I went home thinking I would be helping my parents with everything, but I ended up sleeping for most of my break. Yes, I helped around the house, cooked, and visited the dentist and doctor, but besides that, I didn't have time for much else. My family, as usual, treated me like royalty. They took me shopping and told me to chose out whatever I wanted to eat. My mom's been extremely tired for the last few months, so I was surprised that she didn't take a break when I was home. She sacrificed her rest for me. It was a true display of love on her part, for which I was utterly grateful.
Although I didn't get to experience great adventures with snoopy and Jonny, I was able to spend some quality time with my little brother making rafia dolls at the Children's Discovery Museum. He skillfully shaped a superman our of wet corn husks, and I helped him tie the corn husk cape around superman's neck. I was grateful for the time I was able to spend with Jon. Those opportunities are getting rarer.
While I was at home, Randy passed his driving test and eagerly began driving himself to school the very next day. He's actually a really good driver. I was impressed.
Witnessing an ultrasound was one of the highlights of my week. It's been a long time since I got a glimpse of life in the womb. How amazing it was to watch the tiny, three-inch-long baby perform acrobatics and display its fully formed hands and feet. Before the ultrasound ended, it stretched out its little arms and legs, as if imitating superman. Watching the movements of this child reminded me of Psalm 139:13-16
"For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them." If people are important to God BEFORE BIRTH, how much more at conception and during development?
Unfortunately, it seems that our country does not value life. Both the unborn, the elderly, and the disabled are being killed as if they were pieces of nonliving tissue. While I was at home, my family and I followed the Terri Schiavo case closely. Every morning, we would turn on our radio, hoping to hear that one of the many legal procedings had saved her life. Her case has tested our country's view on the sanctity of human life. Sadly, it appears that more rights are given to criminals on death row than to the disabled.
Obviously, the sanctity of human life is an important issue to me and is more interesting for me to write about than my week.
But, to finish my week off, my family took a trip to San Diego where we visited legoland for Jonny's birthday. It was impressive to inspect the genius that went into building the mini structures which characterize our American landscape. The park, however, is for children ages 2-12, so it wasn't all that entertaining. If Jon had a good time, though, it was worth it.
All in all, I enjoyed my short break from school. My visit made me ever more thankful for my wonderful parents and sweet siblings.
